A fully charged EV (electric vehicle) even without PV solar panels to charge it, can power an average home for approximately two days and potentially earn their owners as much as £800.00 a year using new smart energy technology, says Nissan.
One perceived technological hurdle of having a lot of EV’s on the road is the potential strain on the National Grid, possibly causing infrastructure failure.
Being able to use electric vehicles as a two way ‘battery storage’ device to divert energy out of the car battery-storage system will actually ‘relieve the strain’ and increase grid-stability once EV car demand goes mainstream.
This isn’t like siphoning petrol out of the tank. Unlike traditional fuel, electricity prices and its demand fluctuate throughout the day. Many EV owners charge their cars during off-peak nighttime periods for lower price rates. More astute EV owners charge their cars during the day with photovoltaic solar panels for free.
Under such a ‘smart technology’ proposal, electric vehicle owners even without PV panels on their home, would now be able to sell their stored electricity ‘back to the grid’ for more money than they paid for it. This would replicate and essentially turn your car into a ‘two way’ storage device.
Smarter energy storage and a ‘two-way’ feed-in/feed-out system is the ‘keystone’ to a smart energy future that alleviates the issue of intermittent supply that many people considered alternative technologies Achilles heel. This changes the rules of the energy game completely.
This innovative two-way system will encourage EV and PV uptake, whilst integrating these symbiotic technologies as additional plugins to the current network. This assimilation will help the spread of electric vehicle mobility within the country, benefiting the energy sector, the environment and the EV owners’ wallets too.
I see the positive effects of electric vehicle ownership as progress away from a now two hundred year old combustion technology, but also being the ‘mobile’ energy hubs for the future. Great efforts are being made today within car manufacturing and alternative technology industries to pioneer a ‘self-sustaining’ energy infrastructure that will help solve the capacity issues of the future.
Smart energy management is one of the biggest challenges the world faces in the future, which is why the feasibility of such a ‘smart grid’ can become more flexible and ultimately more sustainable as the world begins to face-up to its gargantuan problems.
After two hundred years of tinkering, and refining of our ability to burn hydrocarbons, the world is finally ready for a new revolution in technology. Ironically, the first internal combustion engine was fueled by hydrogen and it has taken this long to wake-up to the benefits of hydrogen fuel cell technology too.
Photovoltaic discoveries have been around since 1839 too, and as if in parallel these synergistic technologies have been suppressed – until today. Today, PV solar panels are now powering the manufacturing processes that are producing a ‘new generation’ of electric vehicles.

Three significant events have occurred recently.
Nissan has switched on a new photovoltaic farm at its biggest manufacturing site in Sunderland. Made of up 19,000 PV solar panels, the new 4.75 MW system is now fully operational and helping build a new-generation of EV vehicles.
Additionally the EV (electric vehicle) Grand Prix or Formula E racing championship is becoming the new ‘hipster’ in the racing calendar. Major cities across the world, including London, are falling over themselves to host and be associated with the event.
Manufacturer’s, drivers, cities and countries are seeing the writing on the wall and the technological advances made within the EV sector are shining through and laying down the path towards your future vehicle.
The tide of progress towards electric vehicles transcends just motor racing with Norway being the first country to head toward a petrol-free economy before 2025. There’s nothing more powerful than when a technologies time has come.
Forward looking and forward advancements are not just occurring within the opulent world, as the developing world has now unashamedly overtaken the developed world for alternative energy deployment for the first time this year.
It’s shameful that even the UK was being outspent by “much poorer countries” for failing to create the right environment for investors in alternative technologies whilst pledging to go “all out” for more destructive fracking.
As the rest of the world drives forward with investment and adoption of ‘free energy’ technologies, we as a country ashamedly don’t give our children any vision for a better, cleaner future.
If it takes a mere graffiti artist to inspire our young children, then we are a country that has lost its way in the world. If it takes countries like Norway, Malaysia and even Saudi Arabia to show us the way forward with their renewable energy ambitions, then our Eton schooled politicians are either ignorant, deceitful or at least can be accused of not working for the benefit of the country.
The beginnings of a free energy revolution, ultimately starts today with a PV solar paneled roof and your next EV-powered drive being charged for free on your driveway. Golden handshake seeking politicians tried their best to hold back this tide of progress – but no longer can!
The rest as they say, will become history.
