There are 2 types of solar panels

Solar heating panels, use the sun's energy to heat your water, generally for washing, bathing, and swimming pools or space heating when used together with under floor heating.

In a nutshell, Solar heating is when a technology uses the sun's energy to heat hot water and sometimes space heating with the correct technology. Getting solar heating to work with an existing central heating system can be achieved in one of two ways:

  • Energy from the solar heating panels are concentrated in a tank (thermal store) which works together with the central heating system.
  • A lower heating element (solar coil) called the heat exchanger providing heat from the solar system on your roof.

Domestic heating systems can be divided into two groups, the pumped or functional process and the compact or passive mode. Both work in partnership with a supplementary energy source, such as an oil fired or gas central heating system that acts as a back up when the water in the tank, falls below fifty five degree C.

Water heating arrays also known as collectors, are catergorised as either evacuated glass tubes or flat-plate collectors. These panels look very different to photovoltaic solar panel installations and can provide your home with the majority of its annual hot water needs, including space heating in a new build project.

PV electric panels, produce electricity, to contribute towards your energy needs for your home. Current feed-in tariffs allow you to sell your generated power even if you use yourself.

In a nutshell, Photovoltaic (PV) arrays, are made up of a number of cells, and put together they make a module. Modules attached together make a full system, which converts ordinary sunshine into usable current. Individual cells (modules) produce a small amount of power, but when used together with other panels, the current can be large enough to use.

PV panel installations use the sun's photons or light rays with a semi-conductor which use materials designed to conduct electricity, converting the sun's energy into usable electric current. PV electric arrays are made up of thin silicone film called a cell. In order for these technologies to operate successfully, they have to be connected to an inverter which switches the current from AC to DC (direct current) to use within your home or exported out to the National Grid.

The PV (photovoltaic) panels are made up of individual cells, arranged in a grid like pattern which convert the photons into electrons during the daytime and convert them into electricity. The energy generated from photons hitting the surface knock electrons out of their orbit and releases them.

PV arrays are made from crystalline silicon and gallium arsenide which are specially produced. If a panel is rated at 180W, it will perform up to that level in the bright sunny day which would generate 1,000 watts per square metre.

"Prior to the start of the feed-in tariff in 2010, Scotland was the largest installer of panel technologies within the United Kingdom. Over 2010 Yorkshire became the largest adopter of these technologies."

Why choose solar technology?

These technologies have been around for 60 years. With their growth and increase in productivity and performance, they have become one of the future sources of energy for business and domestic.

This technology is currently, a terrific way to invest in your home. You can cut your domestic energy bills and earn money with the efficiency of both types of panel technologies and the resulting energy output they produce.

The benefits

PV arrays are non polluting and causes no harm to the atmosphere. The best benefit is the fact it is a free energy source.

Heating technologies come in 2 types. Known as evacuated tubes or flat-plate solar panels, it is accepted that the tubes give better performance, but flat-plate can be inset into the roof just like a Velux window. We can give you a quotation on both types of installation, or if you have electricity or plumbing skills, then our DIY kits may be suitable.

On-grid connected photovoltaic's arrays (PV) simply put are generators producing electricity from daylight through a process called photovoltaic's. Photo refers to light and voltaic to electricity. Photons creating Electrons, which convert from AC into a DC current were, it can then be used within your home or exported to sell electricity to the National Grid.

Choosing the correct technology can be daunting, especially as they will be prominent in your house for years. You do not want to be the one who chose the 'Beta Max' over the 'VHS video' in technology terms.

We believe MCS accredited solar panels installers are heroes, not in the super power type way, but, it will be the rapid installation of this technology, which could help save our beautiful planet from mankind's addiction to burning fossil fuels.

The benefits and financial rewards of using solar panels are becoming more and more apparent, with the introduction of government backed feed-in tariffs schemes, which are currently, available to home owners across the UK.

A word to the wise.

Solar technology longevity.

Top branded technologies with performance guarantees of up to 20 years, with a proven lifespans of 30 plus years for both solar electric and heating systems. When was the last time you bought a product that still benefits you longer than your mortgage.

Increased property value.

Installing solar panels and installers is similar to adding a conservatory, which may give a possible increase in property value and help sell your home if required in the future.

Stay ahead of the madding crowd.

Sadly, nationally and globally, peak oil is a very high-risk and high-consequence issue for everyone. Stay ahead of the madding crowd and cushion your home from inevitable spiralling energy costs.

Low energy bills and a guaranteed income.

Bring your energy bill's back to 1980s levels and benefit from the feed-in tariffs which give you a better return than your banks savings account.

Common questions about solar panel installations.

Why people install these technologies?

Installations are no longer viewed as green products. Most people have them to reduce dependency, on expensive fossil fuels or as an investment opportunity which will acquire and save them more money than keeping the money in the bank.

Which is best for me?

The sun's energy can be harvested using these technologies, which come in two different types - heating systems, which generate heat for your home or a PV installations which generate clean electricity using the sun's energy. Which one is best for you will depend on your existing home set- up and budget.

Solar panel installations options

Is my roof suitable for these arrays?

This will be reviewed at the survey stage. Anything between south west and south east is exceptionally good, east, and west facing roofs should not be discounted. Most homes in the UK are different in layout and plumbing, so a home survey is essential to quote accurately.

Quotes from installers. Check your roof orientation

If you do not have a suitable roof, you should consider canopy, facade or A-frame installations.

How well does it work in the UK climate?

The United Kingdom receives 60% of the radiation and energy found at the equator. The latest technologies are much more efficient, even generating in diffused sunlight (non direct), so they do work extremely well in climates such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark and even Norway.

Exactly how much energy hits my roof?

The amount of usable the sun's radiation varies depending on your geographic location, but very simply the south coast of England receives around 1,200 kWh equivalent per year and Scotland around 800 kWh with Wales in between these two figures.

There are lots of companies, which is the best?

In a 2001 DTI report, heating systems, we're tested, and not all collectors we're found to be equal. Plastic collectors, for example, were the worse performing system by a very big margin and evacuated tubes were singled, out as the best performing, when installed with our MCS panel installers.

Unfortunately, some companies offer unreasonable prices, give large false discounts and supply inferior products, which do not meet the UK, and EU standards, and this is poor business practice which we actively campaigns against.

Manufacturing (where possible) is the source from sustainable sources, such as geothermal processes we are proud that we can offer you a low carbon product. The installers will be considerate and clean and tidy, leaving your home as clean as when they arrived.

Can these technologies run my central heating?

Maybe, this depends on the type install. We would need to survey your home to see if our heating management system is suitable. In most cases, heating can contribute to your central heating, but not all installation companies offer this technology.

Can I generate and export electricity?

Yes, using a PV (Photovoltaic's) system. Although they are more expensive, heating panels, they can produce a substantial portion of your electricity demand in most cases. Any excess electricity produced are normally sold back to the National Grid.

We are experienced, qualified designers and installers of photovoltaic and heating systems for domestic and commercial installations.

Do I need planning permission in the UK?

No, unless you live in a listed building, an area of outstanding natural beauty or an A-frame.

What grants or feed-in tariffs are available?

Generous feed-in tariffs incentives reward early adopters in the United Kingdom. Annual payments made by your utility company for the energy you generate. The two schemes are:

1. The Renewable Heat Incentive scheme pays property owners who produce heat from a heat producing system and heat pumps an average of 8.5p per KW, produced for a guaranteed 18 year period.

2. The feed-in tariff scheme pays property owners who generate their own electricity from a PV array. The payment is currently 15.44 pence per kWh, produced for a guaranteed 25 year period.

Both feed-in tariffs schemes are an excellent incentive for early adopters, but be warned that later adopters will not get as much as late adopters.

Learn about the feed-in tariffs schemes

Why install these technologies?

Living in the UK has significant advantages including government incentive schemes across the country. Known as the feed-in tariff incentives, when you use either panels, the homeowner gets tax free payments which are index linked and annual payments from your energy provider for 18 or 25 years.

You are making a long-term investment by installing solar panels. It is a prerequisite that the system should last as long as possible - installing low quality products and materials will have a direct effect on the life expectancy of the system.

How are the collectors fixed to the roof?

For most roof types, a rigid stainless steel bracket fixes fixes to your roof rafters. The brackets hook out from underneath the tiles. We do not drill tiles or slates or use silicone to weatherproof your roof. These techniques do not have a long lifespan, but frequently used by lower quality companies.

What does an MCS solar installer mean?

MCS installers are the governments approved and accredited installers who, have been assessed and approved under the Micro-generation Certification Scheme. All products used within the scheme have also been approved giving you the customer peace of mind.

The feed-in tariff scheme requires all systems to be installed using MCS approved installers.

How much does fitting cost?

This technology is not a one size fits all. Installations for both heating and electric can be complicated, due many factors such as layout of your property. Also, they come in many different sizes, so we will need to do an on-site survey of your property to establish your options.
