Solar panels grants & feed in tariffs

The feed in tariffs schemes have replaced solar panels grants.

These government-run feed in tariff schemes aim to reward the earliest adopters for domestic installations, and for commercial solar panels the best financial rewards, with later adopters receiving lower returns, with these now popular incentive schemes.

Common questions about the feed in tariffs

Why has the solar grants scheme been replaced?

The retired Low Carbon Building Programme (LCBP) was retired to emulate the successful feed in tariff scheme from Germany which has grown the German solar panel industry into one of the most successful. As a result of the feed in tariff, Germany is now the biggest adopter of solar technology. They also have a similar climate to the UK's.

Which type of tariff is best for me?

Both solar heating and electric-producing technologies do very different jobs, but both use the sun.

Because household needs across the United Kingdom vary, there can be many factors which determine suitability to a particular tariff. A free consultation with our surveyors may help determine which is best for you.

Solar panels are a no brainer when you look at the long term advantages that this technology provides.

What other benefits are there?

The income you receive is tax free.

In addition to the payments and energy savings, the scheme is designed to be index-linked which means the payment value won't be affected by inflation long term.

The feed in tariffs last for 25 years. However the both types of solar panel technologies have a much longer life span usually between 30-40 years, giving you a great way to protect your household from longer term spiralling energy costs.

How often will I receive the tariff payments?

This can be arranged with your current energy supplier who will be sending you the payments. This can be arranged as annual or quarterly payments. It is a great feeling to receive, instead of having to send, a cheque from your energy company.

What happens to the tariff if I move home?

Solar panels on your roof (as long as you own them) make your home extra saleable. You can easily transfer the tariff over to your home's new owners with one phone call.

How are these funded?

Calculations show that income tax, VAT and corporation tax from the UK's solar panel industry brought in around £330m last year, while the feed in tariff scheme cost just £110m.

In addition, the government are raising funds through both a small increase in electric prices to the standard consumer and additional European funding. These expenditures are part of money our government has already put aside to meet legally binding global warming obligations.

How to apply

You apply through your MCS accredited solar panel installers. Firstly, get several quotes for the work you want and then your preferred installer, who installs your new system will give you the relevant paperwork to give to your existing energy company. Your current energy supplier will pay you your annual revenues. Easy!
