2010 sees record rise in UK solar panels installed

A record number of homeowners had solar panels installed this month and this year, according to energy regulator Ofgem. PV or Photovoltaic panels have been fitted to 2,257 homes so far during August, up from 1,700 in July and 1,400 in June.

Be wary of solar panels for free offers

Householders tempted by a rash of new “solar for free” offers could double their financial savings by paying for the panels themselves, experts have warned. The advice comes as installations of solar photovoltaic panels have exploded in the UK, with the number installed in four months in 2010 more than doubling on the whole of 2009 since a government financial incentive was launched in April.

The UK’s PV solar panels market could grow five fold in 2010 as a result of feed in tariffs according to new analysis by PricewaterhouseCoopers into the prospects for the UK solar PV market.

  • Five fold increase in solar photovoltaic (PV) installations expected in 2010
  • Britain currently lagging a decade behind other leading European countries on solar panels installations

PV cells capture and convert sunlight, even on a cloudy day, into electricity, which can be used to run household appliances and lighting. By 2015, the report estimates that the country’s solar PV energy capacity could have grown over 30 times to reach 1,000 MW. However, even with this growth, the UK’s capacity in 2020 would only reach the levels already achieved by Germany today. (more…)

Why I had solar panels installed to my home?

The initial investment in PV solar panels is not a small one. However, in my case, my newly acquired pension lump sum was struggling to make me any money in a ‘safe’ bank account, so I looked into pv solar with great interest. It seemed that to get a decent return on investment, you needed to purchase a large sized system, which over the year should produce at least 104% of my electrical needs or thereabouts.

The global popularity of solar panels

PV solar panels are expected to provide almost a quarter of the globes electricity supplies by 2050, according to a report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA). With the right policies in place, the IEA says that Photovoltaic solar panels on domestic and commercial buildings could compete with fossil fuel electricity supplies by 2020. By 2030 the IEA anticipate pv solar panels will provide about five percent of global electricity.
