If you thought solar panels were a bad idea, peak oil will change your mind

Cheap, abundant, politically secure oil is no longer available. If you have ever thought your lifestyle whether you are rich or poor was comfortable long term, then please think again. Of late, there have been disparate predictions for our oil reserves, with some claiming that oil will last us for decades. In fact, the question is not: “When will there be no more oil left” but, instead: “When will global demand outstrip production?”, and that could happen sooner than most people realise.

Peak oil theory is being seen more and more in the mainstream news recently. Peak oil is a term for when global oil supply (from oil known oil reserves) is outstripped by the increase in demand. (too many people sucking on the straw).

The cheap and easy oil we rely on, in our day to day lives, has already been found and will soon be pumped out. From now on the newer finds will be increasingly tricky, risky and expensive as which has been shown with the latest oil slick disaster in the US. The limited oil resources are being used up at an ever increasing rate.

Whether we like it or not, our modern civilisation is going to have to embrace high energy pricing as the norm or longer term rationing schemes will have to be implemented. There is no going back to the golden age of cheap energy on which we have grown up with, and come to rely so much on.

If ever there was a need to rebalance our energy industry, factoring in much tougher conditions for oil drilling and factoring in the high price of dwindling reserves, then progressively switching to sustainable alternatives, then this is it. That’s good news for greens.

Stuart Lovatt from Heat my Home, adds “We are noticing a new trend here within the solar panel industry, were people are waking up to our nation’s energy predicaments and are now starting to take responsibility for finding alternate ways to power or heat their homes.”

The future is unclear and unwritten, but one thing is clear preparation for a world with less oil is vital, and this means on a governmental and personal level.
